Geisha Halloween Costumes – Go Japanese In A Fine Oriental Costume

With Halloween just around the corner, people are looking for that all important original costume idea. The stock standard issue outfits are your witch, pirate, zombie and other scary type costumes, but for something out of the box what about an Oriental theme. For men, think about the Samurai costume. For women, consider the Geisha costume. This article will cover what a Geisha costume is made up of and why you might want to wear one for Halloween.

A Geisha is a woman that has been trained in the Japanese way of entertaining. A Geisha will go through many years as an apprentice, learning her trade so to speak. And her trade is multipurpose, she will have skills in performing various ceremonies, like the tea ceremony, and also be able to play musical instruments and recite poetry. In brief, she is a Japanese cultural icon and upholds many traditions that are unique to Japan.

Apart form what she does, a Geisha also has a truly unique look. The most striking feature of a Geisha is her makeup. Young Geishas (known as Maiko) will completely cover their faces in a heavy, white makeup. The lips will be heavily rouged to offset the pale face and create a striking look. The hairstyle is also unique. It is drawn back off the face in a bun shape.

A Geisha will wear a kimono. The kimono can be elaborate and patterned or plain, this is determined by the occasion that it is being worn for or the individual wearing it. On her waist the Geisha will tie an Obi. This is a sash that can also be very elaborate. It will be tied at the back in a creative shape and often give the outfit it shape and look.

These are the key elements of a Geisha costume. As kimonos are quite popular, it would be easy to approximate a Geisha costume yourself bit you can also get fancy dress and genuine outfits to wear. They make you very original at a Halloween party and are sure to get plenty of attention from the crowd.
